Tottenham Owners Eye Bid for New London NBA Franchise in Europe Expansion

The move would extend the family's sports portfolio beyond North London for the first time since Joe Lewis acquired a controlling stake in Spurs in 2001. London features on the league's 12-city target list ahead of a planned 2027 launch.

The consortium setup

The Lewises hold 70.12 per cent of ENIC, Tottenham's parent company, which in turn controls 87.62 per cent of the club. Day-to-day representation runs through Vivienne Lewis — Joe Lewis's daughter — and her husband Nick Beucher, co-chief executive of the Tavistock Group. Joe Lewis himself dropped off Tottenham's "significant control" register in October 2022, after a 2024 guilty plea on insider trading charges and a $5 million fine in New York, followed by a presidential pardon.

Sitting alongside the Lewises is the Checketts family — former owners of MLS side Real Salt Lake and the NHL's St. Louis Blues — and David Checketts personally, a former general manager of the Utah Jazz and president of the New York Knicks. The Eccles family rounds out the group, with shared investments in Burnley and Espanyol, plus venue and event work on the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and the upcoming 2034 Utah games.

The Spurs ledger and the league math

Tottenham's data under ENIC reads as a textbook structural ceiling: six Champions League qualifications through league finish, a 2017 peak of second place, but only two trophies across the tenure — the 2007-08 League Cup and the 2024-25 Europa League. Two consecutive 17th-place finishes — narrowly avoiding relegation in both — produced a rare public statement from the ownership: "We take ultimate responsibility for the situation in which the club finds itself." That record is neutral on its own, but it sets the baseline any new sports venture will be measured against.

NBA Europe, a joint NBA-FIBA venture, targets 12 permanent franchises plus four annual qualifiers. The confirmed host-city slate: London, Manchester, Paris, Lyon, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Munich, Athens, Istanbul, Rome and Milan. The Athletic reported a rival consortium led by American technology executive Nikesh Arora has tabled an offer above $1 billion (£740 million) for the London slot. Battersea Power Station's undeveloped estate is the floated arena site.
