Why Unheralded Specialists Could Outshine Tennis Icons at the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles

According to The New York Times, the 2026 U.S. Open mixed doubles event is built around a high-profile field whose final shape remains uncertain.

Why Unheralded Specialists Could Outshine Tennis Icons at the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles

Five wild cards have been awarded, while three more main-draw places are being held back as players balance singles commitments, injuries and recovery. For athletes and coaches, the key variable is not celebrity value but workload: mixed doubles begins immediately after the Cincinnati Open and uses a compressed match format.

The draw is already split between specialists and singles stars

Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori received a wild card after their direct-entry position was calculated through singles rankings. Alexander Zverev, Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Townsend and Alex Eala are also part of the additional wild-card group.

Six teams entered the main draw directly:

  • Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic
  • Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz
  • Diana Shnaider and Daniil Medvedev
  • Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud
  • Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli
  • Amanda Anisimova and Learner Tien

The structural tension is clear on film: established doubles players bring positioning, communication and point construction, while singles stars bring heavier first-strike tennis and more individual shot creation. The early rounds could therefore produce singles-versus-doubles matchups, a useful test of whether raw pace can overcome doubles-specific spacing and anticipation.

That question also matters beyond this tournament. Doubles rewards compact movement, early contact and disciplined coverage of the middle. Singles players who rely on extended baseline patterns may need to adjust their usage rate of attacking shots, especially when the court is shared and the returner has less space to defend.

Availability is the main tactical variable

The U.S. Tennis Association is holding three main-draw wild cards, and participation depends partly on the health and progress of top singles players at the Cincinnati Open. Carlos Alcaraz is still rehabbing a wrist injury and has not decided whether he will appear at the U.S. Open in any capacity, while Jannik Sinner is absent from the listed field.

Jessica Pegula had planned to partner with Jack Draper, but Draper is managing a chronic arm injury. Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter are planning to play together. Venus Williams was on the most recent entry list alongside Alexander Bublik and could also play doubles with Serena Williams in the women’s event. One of the reserved wild cards may go to Serena and a potential partner if she is fit enough to compete.

For preparation, the sequence is more important than the names. The Cincinnati women’s singles final is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, and the men’s final for Sunday, Aug. 23. Mixed doubles qualifying begins Monday, Aug. 24, with the main draw scheduled for Aug. 25 and 26. Players reaching the later stages in Cincinnati may have only a short turnaround before making a decision about qualifying or entering the U.S. Open event.

That creates a classic recovery-management problem: high-intensity singles volume, limited court time, and a format that still demands repeated accelerations at the net. A player can be physically capable of competing while lacking the freshness required for fast exchange patterns and low-margin returns.

The format favors decision-making under pressure

The qualifying competition features eight teams, with two final wild cards still to be announced and six direct entries. Those direct entries include doubles world No. 1s Henry Patten and Kateřina Siniaková.

Matches will be best of three sets to four games until the final, with a 10-point tiebreak replacing a third set. The final will use regulation six-game sets, again with a 10-point tiebreak instead of a deciding set.

That format reduces the time available for tactical correction. Teams cannot rely on a long third set to recover from poor return positioning or slow communication. The better indicators will be first-ball execution, coverage of the central channel and the ability to protect the weaker player without opening the outside lane.

The ceiling for the event depends on whether the remaining stars arrive healthy and available. The confirmed field already has enough singles quality to generate useful tactical contrasts, but the defining matchups will be decided by specialist doubles habits: movement before contact, role clarity and recovery between points.
